Amazon.co.uk Review
Ever been tempted to trek across the tundra in a high-speed race against five opponents? Thanks to Midway and the PlayStation 2 you can experience the snow and frostbite without ever leaving your armchair in Arctic Thunder . It's a point-to-point race game in which the player gets to choose from a stable of 19 racers before taking to one of the 12 in-game tracks which are packed with twists, turns, secret passageways and power-ups. The track details are quite nice, covering a range of locales from a snowbound Washington DC to the Swiss Alps and even the lost city of Atlantis.
In addition to the usual array of speed and weaponry bonuses there are special trick ramps which allow the player character to pull off a variety of SSX -style air tricks while simultaneously scattering additional pick-ups across the track. The performance of tricks also allows players to accumulate points which can be traded in between contests for modifications and upgrades to characters' snowmobiles and personal equipment.
Arctic Thunder provides multiple game modes, ranging from the run-of-the-mill arcade mode to death-match scenarios where multiple players compete to knock the opposition to the floor. Hands and feet are used to great effect allowing for plenty of close-quarter fisticuffs--all good, clean, politically correct fun, then.
In theory it all sounds great but a combination of limp gameplay, uninspiring in-game tunes and graphics which would look poor on a PSone add up to an experience that's quite frankly poor. SSX and SSX Tricky have taken snow-borne sports and elevated them to a digital art form; Arctic Thunder is no real competitor. -- Chris Russell |
